This weeks question is:
Q: Have you had a character that disappointed you? One that you fell in love with and then “broke up” with later on in either the series or a stand-alone book? Tell us about him or her.
It's been a while since I've done one of these, but I saw this week's question and I knew I just had to jump back in. How could I not answer such a question?? I've read several books lately, and I must say that this is a very difficult question to answer. I'm not that picky when it comes to the characters of my books, but there are two that stand out in my mind. Several of you may hate me for my answer, and I hope that you won't be to harsh on me! haha.. There are spoilers in these answers so if you haven't read the Twilight saga or the Nightshade trilogy, I suggest you not read the explanations as to why these two were a huge disappointment to me. And without further ado.. I give you the two characters who disappointed me the most in two different series of books:1. Bella Swan
We all know the books. "The lion fell in love with the lamb." Bella falls in love with a vampire named Edward; he falls in love with her.. In Twilight, I was fine with that. So she fell in love? Who doesn't? So he sparkles, drinks human blood, is stronger than any human could ever possibly be. Big deal, right? He's kind, caring, charming, and keeps her safe. What's not to love? Then comes New Moon. And he leaves her. Yes, it's to keep her safe, but she doesn't know that. And what does she do? She completely falls apart. Not that that isn't okay, because I know it happens, but it's what she does when she falls apart. She does anything and everything she can to get an adrenaline rush, including almost killing herself by jumping off a cliff, just so she can hear his voice in her head. Throughout all of this, she slowly starts falling for Jacob, even though she denies it throughout the entire book, and just when they're about to get together, Edward does something incredibly stupid and Bella rushes to his side to save him. Not that I wouldn't do the same if I was in her position, but by this point, I was getting incredibly frustrated with the girl. And what happens when she comes back from saving Edward from exposing himself to the world?? Pretends like nothing happened between her and Jacob. Like they hadn't fallen for each other and almost kissed. Like they hadn't spent an entire school year by each others sides. AND THEN, she goes back and forth between the two while she was still technically with Edward. She couldn't stay away from Jacob, though nothing physical happens between them until later on in Eclipse, but it's implied throughout the entire book that she's in love with him too, yet she denies it. And denies it. And denies it, while keeping him on a leash. Not only is she in denial, but when Edward starts telling her what do to, she becomes completely defiant against him, doing what she wanted. Hanging out with Jacob anyways. When this started happening, I instantly hated Edward. He was okay until this point, but after that I was Team Jacob 150%. The right choice was so obvious to me and I couldn't believe that in the end, she still chose Edward. I hated the ending of this series so much. I'm still not over the fact that she chose Edward over Jacob when Jacob was definitely the better of the two.
2. Calla Tor
And there you have it. The two characters I was extremely disappointed with. And let the hate messages begin... lolDon't get me wrong. I'm in love with this trilogy of books. I loved it so much, and while so many people hated the ending (me somewhat included), I thought it was a very interesting way to end things and I commend Andrea for her creativity. Never in a million years would I have thought to end the series in such a way. However, that is not what this is about. This is about Calla and her complete lack of ability to control her lust, and yes, I do mean lust for both Ren and Shay. Yes, she loved them both for very different reasons, but it was not her love for them that made her jump on them every chance she got. It was lust. And she couldn't control it. Every time she succumbed to it. Often cheating on one with the other and the only time she ever controlled herself was when the were all together in Bloodrose and to keep the alpha males from lashing out at each other, she refused choose one of them until the battle was over. Of course, that didn't last very long at all, and she did end up giving in to her desires beforehand. Even after she had chosen one of them, and made it a point to tell him so, she still gave in to the other. I was so pissed off at her for this and incredibly disappointed. The choice, in my mind, was crystal clear, and it was known to her as well. She knew who she wanted to be with and who was better for her, but she still gave in to the lust she had for the other. Even thinking about it in this moment it pisses me off. Even though she chose the person I wanted her to choose, she took forever in making the decision because of her inability to control herself, and it was completely unnecessary.
I absolutely get where you're coming from (even though we don't have the same opinion). It's just SO DARN effed up when a series or a stand-alone ends in a way you DID NOT want it to end. I can relate.
