Review: Settling by Shelley Workinger

Settling
Author: Shelley Workinger
Series: Solid, #2
Summary: At the beginning of the summer, Clio Kaid was one of a hundred teens brought to a secret Army installation. But it was no ordinary camp and they weren’t ordinary kids…

Picking up where “Solid” left off, Clio and her friends realize that they aren’t ready to go home; they’re determined to stay on campus and continue their journey of self- discovery. But someone doesn’t feel the same way and will do anything to drive them away – even kill.

Friendships will be tested, abilities will evolve, and more secrets will come out as the teens race to stop the killer before he sets his sights on one of them…

Review

I definitely liked this one better than the first. Clio and her gang are still at the private army base, trying to figure out just how the C9x project has changed them and why. With their new found powers, they have all been placed in different jobs. Clio is now working with Lieutenant Graham who has taken the place of  Colonel Clark while he recovers in the hospital.

The writing style is significantly better in Settling as is the plot. Clio is having crazy mood swings and doing things that she wouldn't normally do, shutting out all of her friends but no one seems to know why. People are being attacked left and right, and there are two new students on campus which makes the attacks even more suspicious. Somehow Clio ends up in the middle of things. All she wants is to live happily on base and discover what her abilities mean, but things keep going wrong. And she's slowly unraveling.

The attacks throughout the book keep things interesting, and with Clio's poor decisions only adding to the drama it was easy to keep reading, needing to know who is attacking people and why Clio is acting nuts. At the end of the book, I really felt bad for Clio. She messed up big time and everyone turns their back on her when she needs them the most. The book leaves off at this point making it feel a little unfinished, but hopefully things will look better for her in Sound.

I rate this book:

  2. Oh I've never seen this series around before. It's surprising when I see someone like a sequel more than the first though it's so uncommon. Also, I like the name Clio!! >.<

  3. I did get a review request for Solid a year or two ago and it did sound very interesting. Sadly I didn't have time to accept any request at the time. I am glad to read that the series is improving by the book, perhaps the third installment will be a four star read? Have a wonderful day, Kelly.
