CITY OF BONES Read-Along: Chapter 12

In honor of the movie coming out in theaters on August 21st, I have decided to join the City of Bones Read-Along. If you haven't read this book, now is the perfect opportunity! There will be quotes and chapter summaries, as well as my own thoughts on certain events that occur within the story and I don't plan on holding back.

Chapter 12: Dead Man's Party

Summary:

The directions on the invitation sent them to a neighborhood made up of mostly factories and warehouses. As they made their way to the party, Isabelle held out her Sensor somehow navigating with it. Simon seems fascinated. Clary stays back as far away from them as she can and Jace slows down to her pace telling her to keep up because the last time he left her alone she was attacked by a demon. Jace notices Clary's hostility, questioning her about what's going on. She makes a comment about weird creepy guys digging around in her brain. Isabelle leads them down a narrow street coming to a stop when several black motorcycles appear parked on their route. These motorcycles run on demon energies and are driven by vampires. They are clearly in the right place. They stand in the entryway as Isabelle rings the buzzer; a man appears in the doorway, calling himself Magnus Bane. He doesn't appear too happy about Nephilim being at his party but lets them in anyways. Once they enter his apartment, Clary tells Simon that Magnus looks familiar to her. After being there for a few minutes Magnus appears at Clary's side and tells her that the party is in honor of his cat's birthday, who ran away. Suddenly a vampire bellows out Magnus's name and complains about someone having poored holy water into his gas tank, ruining his motorcycle. Magnus tells him it isn't his responsibility, but the vampire presses on until Magnus uses magic to force the man out. Jace asks Magnus if they can talk to him in private and if he doesn't help he'll be getting a visit from the Silent City. They go into his bedroom and Clary tells him that she's actually the one who wants to talk to him. Magnus claims not to know anything, but Jace comes to Clary's defense saying that she can't remember what happened because someone put a block on her mind and it was only his name that could get out of her memories during their trip to the Silent City. Magnus admits to signing his name on her mind because he was proud of his work and that he put the spell on her mind because it was the way Clary's mother wanted it.

Quotes:

"Well, hurry up," said Isabelle. "I didn't get this dressed up to watch you mess around in the gutter with a bunch of motorcycles."
"They are pretty to look at," said Jace, hopping back up on the pavement. "You have to admit that."
"So am I," said Isabelle, who didn't look inclined to admit anything. "Now hurry up."

"If you help us, anything you say will be confidential."
"And if I don't help you?"
Jace spread his hands wide. The rune tattoos on his palms stood out stark and black. "Maybe nothing. Maybe a visit from the Silent City."
Magnus's voice was honey poured over shards of ice. "That's quite a choice you're offing me, little Shadowhunter."
"It's no choice at all," said Jace.
"Yes," said the warlock. "That's exactly what I meant."

Thoughts:

We finally meet the magnificent Magnus Bane in this chapter! It's a rather short one ending on a note that we all knew it would, but just as Clary we hoped it wasn't entirely true that it was her mother who had taken her memories from her.
