Chapter 13: The Memory of Whiteness

Summary:

Clary finally gets to ask the one question she's been dying to ask since finding out her memories had been purposefully kept from her: Why? But only her mother can answer that question. Magnus proceeds to tell her the story of the first time he met her, when she was two years old, and that he has seen her every two years since. He admits to having recognized Clary the moment she walked in, and it was then Clary realized why he seemed so familiar--she had seen him coming out of Madame Dorothea's and thought he was only a cat. She asks him if she'll remember all the things she has forgotten if he removes the spell from her mind but Magnus tells her that he cannot remove it. Jace is outraged but if Magnus made even the smallest mistake, her mind could forever be damaged and over time the effects will vanish anyways. He says he can't give her back her memories but he can give her something she would have had if she had grown up as a Nephilim: the Gray Book. He flips through it searching for a certain page. When he finds it, he hands the book to Clary to study. She does, recognizing the rune Remember. Excitedly she flips through more pages, recognizing more runes until Magnus snatches it out of her grasp because it is far too tiring on her mind to read them that fast.

After discussing Valentine and the Mortal Cup, Magnus excuses himself back to his party. They follow Magnus out--after Jace makes sure Clary is alright--and find a drunken Isabelle in distress. Simon has turned into a rat because he drank the blue drink. Clary grabs Isabelle's wrist in anger, asking how she could have left him alone. When Isabelle complains about Clary crushing her bracelet, she calls her a bitch and drops to the floor searching for Simon, finding him under the bar. Simon the rat runs into Clary's hands and she snuggles him up close to her, attempting to console him. They seek Magnus for help but he refuses because the effects will wear off in a couple of hours and he'll turn back. They decide it would be best to put Simon in Clary's backpack to sneak him onto the subway. A commotion stirs near the door when the vampires complaining about their ruined motorcycles and missing friends causing an unnerved Magnus call of the party and send everyone home. Before Clary could leave, Magnus gives Clary a message from her mother: not to risk her own life looking for her and to keep in mind that when her mother ran away from the Shadow World, it wasn't away from the Downworlders. It was the Shadowhunters.

As they walk toward the subway, Clary notices that her backpack is open and Simon isn't in it. Clary and Jace turn turn around and head back to Magnus's when they realize the zipper has been torn from the outside. Isabelle and Alec go on. They wake Magnus and Clary explains that Simon the rat is missing, begging him to help her. He says he saw one of the vampires leaving with a brown rat and thought that it was one of their own. Jace asks where the vampires lair is and at first Magnus refuses but when Clary steps in asking him to do this one thing for her after what he stole from her he tells them 'the old Hotel Dumont'. He then directs Jace to a holy place and slams the door in their faces.

Quotes:

"Move it along, teenagers. The only person who gets to canoodle in my bedroom is my magnificent self."

"I wouldn't feel too sorry for him. That's probably the closest he's ever gotten to second base."

"Not for free, darling, and you can't afford me."

Thoughts:

Oh poor Simon! He's had such a rough time ever since Clary went missing for those few days and now he has been turned into a rat and taken by vampires into their lair. The poor boy just can't catch a break. To me, Isabelle seems very careless even if she is drunk. I mean, surely she could have warned him about the drinks!! The first time I read this book I really thought Magnus was cold and callous, but now after having read so many Shadowhunter books and I know him better I can understand his attitude towards the Shadowhunters. And everyone really. It's more of a wall that he's put up to keep himself from getting hurt than being uncaring. I really can't wait to see this party on the big screen! And see Simon's transformation into a rat.
