Best I've Read in 2013: Dystopia and Classic

It is day three of my Best I've Read in 2013 and so far I've covered Contemporaries and Fantasy/Paranormal/Science Fiction. Today I'm going to cover Dystopians! Dystopia is one of my favorite genres but unfortunately I didn't read too many of them this year so this list will be rather short. I'm also adding Classics to this list as well since I didn't read too many of those either.

Prodigy

Author: Marie Lu
Series: Legend, #2
Injured and on the run, it has been seven days since June and Day barely escaped Los Angeles and the Republic with their lives. Day is believed dead having lost his own brother to an execution squad who thought they were assassinating him. June is now the Republic's most wanted traitor. Desperate for help, they turn to the Patriots - a vigilante rebel group sworn to bring down the Republic. But can they trust them or have they unwittingly become pawns in the most terrifying of political games?
This is one of those books that you're entirely uncertain as to how things are going to play out. You don't know which side to trust, which is the right side to be on and you're desperate for June and Day to find some kind of peace in a world that seems to only want destruction. It definitely kept me on edge and I can't wait to pick up Champion and see how this wonderful series ends. No review for this one though since it was one of those that I read during my break.

Sever

Author: Lauren DeStefano
Series: Chemical Garden, #3
With the clock ticking until the virus takes its toll, Rhine is desperate for answers. After enduring Vaughn’s worst, Rhine finds an unlikely ally in his brother, an eccentric inventor named Reed. She takes refuge in his dilapidated house, though the people she left behind refuse to stay in the past. While Gabriel haunts Rhine’s memories, Cecily is determined to be at Rhine’s side, even if Linden’s feelings are still caught between them.
Meanwhile, Rowan’s growing involvement in an underground resistance compels Rhine to reach him before he does something that cannot be undone. But what she discovers along the way has alarming implications for her future—and about the past her parents never had the chance to explain.

In this breathtaking conclusion to Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden trilogy, everything Rhine knows to be true will be irrevocably shattered.
Sever was breathtaking, terrifying, and heartbreaking all at the same time. I immediately fell in love with this series and Lauren DeStefano brings it to a surprising conclusion. I personally was devastated when a certain event happened, but even so I really loved this final installment. Once again, no review for this one.

Eve

Author: Anna Carey
Series: Eve, #1
The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.

Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust...and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.
Eve is one of those books that people either seem to love it or hate it. I personally loved it. I couldn't put it down and I was completely sucked in to Eve's journey. The ending was a bit heartbreaking though, but I definitely can't wait to read the next installment. My Review

Sense and Sensibility

Author: Jane Austen

Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.
I absolutely love Jane Austen. She has such an eloquence to her writing and she has an impeccable talent for perfectly encompassing all of the feeling that girls and women feel when falling in love, sometimes with the wrong man.  My Review

Comments

  1. I haven't read ANY of these series yet! I am definitely missing out! The Chemical Garden series and Legend were both already on my radar, but I added Eve to my TBR now as well.
