Sora’s life was full of magic—until she discovered it was all a lie.
Heir to Mt. Fuji’s spirit kingdom, Sora yearns to finally take on the sacred kami duties. But just as she confronts her parents to make a plea, a ghostly army invades the mountain. Barely escaping with her life, Sora follows her mother’s last instructions to a heart-wrenching discovery: she is a human changeling, raised as a decoy while her parents’ true daughter remained safe but unaware in modern-day Tokyo. Her powers were only borrowed, never her own. Now, with the world’s natural cycles falling into chaos and the ghosts plotting an even more deadly assault, it falls on her to train the unprepared kami princess.
As Sora struggles with her emerging human weaknesses and the draw of an unanticipated ally with secrets of his own, she vows to keep fighting for her loved ones and the world they once protected. But for one mortal girl to make a difference in this desperate war between the spirits, she may have to give up the only home she’s ever known.
“Megan Crewe’s A Mortal Song is engrossing from the first chapter. The world of the kami is beautifully fantastic and delicately drawn, and the switched-at-birth scenario made me instantly feel for both of these resilient, brave girls. A Mortal Song has lots of magic, lots of heart, and lots to love.” -Kendare Blake, author of Three Dark Crowns

REVIEW

When I signed up to review A Mortal Song, I actually knew nothing at all about the book! There was no cover, no description.. It was still just a "secret project" by Megan Crewe, but I joined because I've read The Way We Fall and I rather enjoyed it. Plus I loved the whole mystery behind it being a "secret project". When it was finally revealed and I read the premise, I was so glad that I had decided to join this blog tour and review it. I couldn't wait to get my copy and dive in!

I admit it took me a little while to fully immerse myself into the story. Working a full time job and having two kids running around makes it so difficult to be able to sit down and really concentrate on what I'm reading, but when I finally did, I couldn't put it down. It pulled me in.

A Mortal Song follows the story of Sora, a girl who grew up among the kami--spirits which take the form of humans and other creatures who keep the world and elements in balance. These spirits use ki, an energy that can be bent and used in different forms and can turn the kami from ethereal to corporeal forms and back. Sora has spent her entire life learning to wield ki and use it when necessary, believing that she herself is kami. She is desperate to learn the kami ways and gain their responsibilities. But then a ghost army attacks and she discovers everything she ever believed herself to be is a complete lie. And now that the time of the prophecy has come, she is supposed to bo back to being the normal human girl she really is. Only it isn't that simple.

Sora's world truly sang to me. In fact, I almost wish I was kami and could wield ki myself! To make myself faster and stronger and to be able to heal myself at a moments notice would be pretty awesome. Unfortunately, we don't get to see this magical world full of magic and wonder as much as I would have liked. Sure we get to see them use ki and fight and such, but to actually be a part of the kami world that Sora is used to, it isn't really there. The whole story is focused on the journey of finding the girl from the prophecy and saving the world from total destruction. I wish I could have seen the kami in their normal day to day lives.

Even so, I was still intrigued by everything I was reading. The journey was fast-paced, spanning over a matter of a week and each day was a new battle to be faced. It's full of action and fighting, and there is some romance thrown in. And we all know I'm a sucker for romance.

Overall, A Mortal Song is about discovering who you really are, finding strength within yourself when you feel there's none left to spare and unearthing an unlikely hero when everyone doubts your abilities. It reminds you to believe in yourself and that just because someone else doesn't see your true potential doesn't mean it isn't there and can't be found.

About Megan Crewe

Like many authors, Megan Crewe finds writing about herself much more difficult than making things up. A few definite facts: she lives with her husband, son, and three cats in Toronto, Canada (and does on occasion say “eh”), she tutors children and teens with special needs, and she can’t look at the night sky without speculating about who else might be out there.
