Vampire Academy Read-Along: Chapter 1

Today begins our journey into the Vampire Academy world with the VA Read-Along! I am so excited to be reading this book again. I remember the first time I read it and instantly fell in love with the world Richelle Mead created. I hope that for those of you who haven't read this series yet, you also find a love for it. If you're only now finding out about the Read-Along and want to join, you can add your name to the linky here. Feel free to post your own summaries of the chapters if you like and I encourage you to comment with your thoughts about what you're reading! This Read-Along WILL be full of SPOILERS so if you haven't read the book and you're not joining the Read-Along, I would avoid these posts at all cost!

And now to get down to it! :)

Chapter One

"I felt her fear before I heard her screams."

The first line of Vampire Academy lets us know that our main character is connected with someone, a girl, in a clearly supernatural way. This is confirmed further when our main character's own dream is disrupted by the girls nightmare which wakes her up. She then realizes that the girl, Lissa, is screaming and thrashing on her bed, and she wakes her.

Lissa went through something traumatic and she is once again dreaming about it. After Lissa calms down, we discover that the two girls are living with someone else as well and this person has a cat who doesn't like our main character, a dhampir, but it's rather fond of Lissa who is a Moroi.

"When did we last do a feeding?"

Our main character asks Lissa after noticing the dark circles under her eyes. Lissa reluctantly agrees to feed upon her friend and it is here that we discover that Lissa is a type of vampire. Being bitten by a vampire, it seems, is oddly pleasurable thanks to their endorphin-triggering saliva. However, it leaves our main character feeling a little light-headed and while Lissa fetches the girl some food, our MC discovers the cat watching something outside the window: a man, staring right at her.

He disappears, but the fact that the cat is uneasy with him worries our MC.  She grabs a few of their belonging and looks for Lissa, finding her in the kitchen with one of their housemates. She subtly tells Lissa to use compulsion to take his car keys. He gives them to her without hesitation.

"Rose . . . what are we going to do if they catch us?" She whispered.
"They won't."

Rose and Lissa had been found before, but never caught, in the two years they had been on the run from the people they grew up around. Rose tries to ease Lissa's mind by telling her a simple plan, even though there's nothing simple about it.

They have only made it halfway to the boy's car when they are forced to make a run for it. Whoever is after them is moving in fast. Rose, still woozy from the loss of blood, is having more trouble standing upright than she can afford. The people are gaining on them. A man appears in front of their targeted car and the two girls immediately come to a stop. Rose notes that the man is hot but he is an obstacle in their escape. More people come out of the shadows, Rose noticing at least a dozen.

The man in front of them moves closer and Rose attacks him, putting her all into getting Lissa away from these people who have come to get them, but it's fruitless. The man is far too skilled. He notices the bite marks on her neck but doesn't comment on it. Rose starts to attack again but Lissa stops her. They have been defeated.

The man steps forward and says, "My name is Dimitri Belikov. I've come to take you back to St. Vladimir's Academy, Princess."

  1. I liked the first chapter! I'm already looking forward to learning more about Rose and Lissa's relationship, and the history of the dhampir and moroi races. I'd also like to see more Dimitri! In fact, I think this may actually be my first time reading a YA novel that featured characters with a Russian background...
