Review: Apollyon by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Apollyon
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Covenant, #4
Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.

I cannot give enough praise to Jennifer Armentrout for this amazing series. I am amazed with every book and every turn of the page. I finished Apollyon last night right before I went to bed and I even dreamed that I was Alex! I won't go into the details of the dream because it has to do with the story and I don't want to give away what happens but let me just say... HOLY CRAP. Even in my dream I can't figure out how Alex is going to do what she has to do!

The story begins with Alex locked securely in a cage which has been put together by gods to keep her from escaping, running to Seth and turning him into the God Killer. Being inside Alex's mind while she's connected with Seth was... how do I put this--interesting yet infuriating. I liked that she was communicating with Seth, but the things that were said between them were crazy. I miss the old Seth. Bad. I still have hope for him coming back around to being that guy again, but I'm not sure how he's going to get there. This series could really go in any direction. I have no idea what's going to happen in Sentinel. And call me crazy but I'm still on Team Seth even after everything that he's done. Even after everything that's happened between Alex and Aiden and I know that it's probably going to be them in the end, I still have hope for Seth. At the very least I hope he redeems himself.

I won't go into anymore details about the book because it would give away far too much of the story and I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'll talk about the pacing. For me, the beginning was perfectly paced but then once it got to the middle it started slowing down and then at the end it picked back up. I think that a huge part of the slowness came from the fact that they were kind of stuck in one place for so long in hiding. I'm not going to lie and say that this book is all sunshine and rainbows. It has its dark moments, with sadness and heartbreak, but it also has its beautiful moments. And it certainly isn't lacking in sarcasm.

If I could have Sentinel in my hands right now, I would. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger even though the book did wrap up rather nicely. However, with the impending war we can assume that this next installment will be full of action and I can't wait to find out what happens. Hurry up November 2nd!!

I rate this book:

  3. Wow...I'm kind of left speechless here. The ending was so intense and I could just imagine how much pain Alex was in. I was just so shocked and surprised. I couldn't put the book down and read it all in one day. That was how good it was.
